How appropriate is it for a construction company to adhere to ESG principles?
The use of Environmental Social Governance (ESG) principles improves the company's reputation, simplifies investment attraction and provides a competitive advantage in working with international customers.
In projects implemented by Rauta, we always use solutions that comply with ESG principles, for example, air-tight technology or Energy series sandwich panels, which reduce operational carbon and increase the sustainability of the property.
In 2022, the company was the first in Ukraine to introduce Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for building envelopes, which contain information about what the product is made of and how it affects the environment throughout the entire life cycle of the building.
In 2025, Rauta added the Global Warming Potential (GWP) parameter to the characteristics of facade claddings and sandwich panels, which allows architects and investors to control the environmental characteristics of products and influence the increase in the sustainability of projects.
In 2026, Rauta plans to introduce sandwich panels, ventilated facades claddings and roofing materials made of “green” steel to the Ukrainian market, the production of which uses hydrogen, electricity and biogas instead of fossil fuels. The residual product of such a production process is not carbon dioxide, but water. The use of these products will significantly reduce the amount of embodied carbon.
We actively participate in social projects: we have repeatedly supported the Steel Freedom architectural competition, provide grants for training young architects at the InLab and PLUS MINUS schools, installed a training stand in the specialized energy saving classroom of the KNUCA, and launched an educational project on sustainable design.
How important is the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in construction?
The construction and operation of buildings is responsible for the consumption of about 35% of primary energy, 17% of fresh water, 25% of wood and 39% of CO2 emissions in the world. That is why sustainable design is one of the important approaches to creating favorable living conditions without harming the environment.
Sustainable development in construction provides significant benefits not only to society, but also to the project investor, as it increases the value and energy efficiency of buildings and allows you to get more points when certifying under the LEED and BREEAM systems.
Why are steel solutions considered to be more sustainable than reinforced concrete? Is this a real advantage for customers in Ukraine?
If necessary, steel structures can be relatively easily relocated or completely recycled as scrap metal, which significantly increases their value to the customer compared to reinforced concrete solutions. At the end of the life cycle of a building made of concrete structures, the owner is left with a frame that requires additional costs for its disposal. In contrast, the owner of a building made of steel structures is left with a steel frame for which you can get money if you hand it over for scrap metal.
Is the Ukrainian market ready to pay more for steel solutions with higher quality and a lower environmental footprint?
European construction customers implementing projects in Ukraine are not only ready to pay for steel solutions, but also often insist on the use of more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient materials. This is due to a conscious attitude towards the environment and the experience of construction in the EU, where the European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings (EPBD) is in force, which sets requirements for increasing the energy efficiency of existing and new buildings, which directly affects the criteria for choosing materials.
Unfortunately, Ukrainian construction customers mostly look at the low price, rather than at environmental or quality characteristics, so they often choose cheaper products.
If Ukraine implements the European Directive EPBD, the demand for materials with better thermal and environmental characteristics will increase. This will increase competition between Ukrainian and European manufacturers and force the former to invest in modern production processes.
What solutions for energy-efficient buildings do you offer?
Today, Rauta offers sustainable solutions that increase the energy efficiency of buildings and contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions, including:
The technology of airtightness of envelope structures, the basis of which is the sandwich panels of the Energy series
RoofSolar solar power plant on the roof
Hiarc and Pural energy-reflecting coatings for facades and roofs, which heat up 23% less than conventional ones
Life series sandwich panels with a content of recycled materials up to 80%
